Can you say “geek”? | About Me Mondays

Hey there!  Today’s my weekly About Me Monday, where you get to learn a bit more about Leila the person and not just Leila the photographer!

Today is where I truly lay it all out there for you and tell you something about myself that I should absolutely, without a doubt maybe keep to myself.  I am a video game geek.  I totally geek out about video games and become wildly obsessed.  BUT!  Only a very certain type of game.  First person role player games set in a fantasy world.  Think knights, dragons, magic, etc.  When I say obsessed, I mean I can play for 6+ hours at a stretch.  NO lie.  Until wee hours of the morning sometimes.  It’s been more than once or twice that I’ve quickly snuck into bed before Stephen gets up with the kids so that he MIGHT not notice that I’ve been up all night.  Sad, but true.  Of course, he always knows!

Right now, my big time obsession is Dragon Age 2.  Best. Game. Ever.  I’m a huge fan of the entire game series and am absolutely heartbroken that I’m going to have to wait 1-2 years for the next game to (hopefully) come out.

The thing that tips Dragon Age over the top to Best. Game. Ever. is the addition of adding romance to the game. ROMANCE!  In a fighty video game!  Yes!  You can form romances with characters!  Yes, I know, this makes me the geekiest girly girl ever, but I adore it.  In Dragon Age: Origins, I fell in love with Alistair.  Red hair, hot, wildly sarcastic…remind you of anyone?  Oh yeah, that’d be my husband.  =)  Except Alistair fights dragons and darkspawn instead of traffic and noncompliant children.  Surely you can see the allure?

With this game, though, my crush on Alistair has been replaced by a  love for Fenris, a runaway elven slave with magic tattoos.  I think it’s the broody moodiness.  I have historically had a thing for brooding, moody men.  Thankfully, I broke that trend with Stephen and married a sweet, even-tempered man.  But surely it’s okay to crush on a fictitious and even 100% imaginary character, right?  RIGHT?!  Stephen knows about my crushes and loves me anyway, so that should tell you a lot about what a great man I married.  =)  Brooding moodiness is good for little crushes, but definitely not for life.

Okay, there you go!  I’ve probably driven away people by the DOZENS by admitting the depths of my nerdiness.  PLEASE say there are those of you out there who feel me on this one, though!  Any other video game fans out there?

101 in 1001 | About Me Mondays

I’m doing something a little different here. My blog can be a great place to see my work and get to know my style, but I’d love y’all to also get to know me as a person and not just as a photographer.  So I’m starting a new series that I’m calling “About Me Mondays”. I’ll be posting random bits of who I am, such as my favorite album right now, what kind of TV shows I like, stuff about my kids and family, what I was like as a kid, etc. If that sounds boring or horribly narcissistic, be sure to stop by Tuesday through Friday from now on! Otherwise, enjoy getting to know me the way that I often get to know you during our photo sessions. =)

I’m going to start the series off with a bang! Er, well, a list, really. Taking my inspiration from Melissa Jill, I’m posting my 101 in 1001. That is, 101 things I hope/plan to/WILL do in the next 1001 days. I’m technically not going to start until May 1st, so think of it as an early bonus. 1001 days from May 1st is Jan 24th, 2014, so I have quite a bit of time to work on these. If anyone else would like to start on May 1st with me, let me know!

Okay, here’s my list, in no particular order. I left a few open at the end to accommodate how I, my life and my goals might change in the next couple years.  If you see any that you might like to do with me or can help me with, please let me know!!!

New Holiday Mini-Sessions | Urban and Beach Family Photographer

Urban and Beach Photographer

Hey all.  I’m so excited to announce my first Holiday Mini-Sessions!  Just in time to get those holiday cards made and sent out with a recent photo of your gorgeous family.  =)

You have two times of day (morning and late afternoon), two weekends (October 23/24 and November 6/7) and two settings (urban and beach) to choose from, so there’s something for everyone!  There are only a very limited number of sessions available, so please be sure to book as soon as possible to secure your session.  Here’s the breakdown of the sessions:

  • Saturday, October 23rd – Urban session in Olde Towne, Portsmouth – 8am, 8:30am, 9am, 9:30am for the morning sessions and 3pm, 3:30pm, 4pm, 4:30pm, 5pm for the late afternoon sessions
  • Sunday, October 24th – Beach session in Norfolk or Virginia Beach (TBD…let me know if you have a preference!) – 4pm, 4:30pm, 5pm for the late afternoon sessions
  • Saturday, November 6th – Urban session in Olde Towne, Portsmouth – 8am, 8:30am, 9am, 9:30am for the morning sessions and 3pm, 3:30pm, 4pm, 4:30pm, 5pm for the late afternoon sessions
  • Sunday, November 7th – Beach session in Norfolk or Virginia Beach (TBD…let me know if you have a preference!) – 4pm, 4:30pm, 5pm for the late afternoon sessions

Each session includes 20 minutes of shooting time, 8+ proofs in a private, online gallery to choose from and either 24 custom holiday cards or 1 low-resolution image (printable up to 5×7) for making your own holiday card.  Upgrade to your package to include 24 holiday cards AND 1-3 medium-resolution images (printable up to 8×10).  Add-ons are also available, including additional holiday cards, beautiful pocket-sized accordion albums (perfect brag books for grandparents!), gift prints (8×10 and smaller) and gorgeous mounted prints, ready to frame or display on easels.

Many of you know that our family is adopting a little boy from Ethiopia.  Our case has been submitted to court in Ethiopia and we’re just waiting to hear when our court date will be.  We’re hoping for a December or January court date, so fingers crossed!  We have to travel for court, so we’ll be meeting our little guy for the first time in just a matter of weeks!  ALL of the profits from these sessions will go directly to our travel fund.  Our travel costs will be substantial as both Stephen and I have to travel for the court trip and we’re hoping to bring Eliza with us for the visa/pick-up trip a few weeks after court.  With round-trip airfare being $1200-1900 per person (depending on the time of year), it adds up VERY quickly!

To book your session, just go to http://leilawylie.bookmonline.com, select your preferred package, date and time.  You’ll then be prompted for your contact info.  After that’s all filled out, you can choose to pay your session fee online via PayPal (you do NOT need a PayPal account to pay via PayPal), you can mail a check or you can call me with your credit card number.  Whatever works best for you!

Of course, full sessions are always available as well.  If you’re thinking about a mini-session and think you’d like to go with a full session instead (1-2 hours of shooting), I’d be happy to offer you some special deals on holiday cards, accordion albums and medium-resolution images.

Please let me know if you have any questions at all.  I’m here to help!  I can’t wait to see y’all.  =)

Puddle jumping | Portsmouth Children’s Photographer

We’ve had a few evenings of hard rain lately, so Eliza and I took advantage of the many puddles to photograph one of her favorite activities….jumping in puddles!  She had a great time and I have “fun” trying to hold onto an umbrella and my camera at the same time!

I love the pictures that we got.  Not because they’re painstakingly composed or technically perfect captures.  But because they’re REAL.  They’re an honest slice of our life right now.  I will look back on these 10, 20, 30 years from now and will remember when Eliza was this small and when her idea of amazing parenting was my allowing her to jump in puddles until her dress was (in her terms) “squelching wet”.

THIS is exactly why I’m a photographer and why I love doing what I do.  =)

Photo walk through Olde Towne | Portsmouth Photographer

A few weeks ago, I went on a little photo walk through Olde Towne in Portsmouth with my good friend from high school, Jenny.  Okay, mostly we just wanted to gab, but we did take a bunch of photos, too!  It was a great day, so I thought I’d share a few photos.  I’m not used to taking pictures without people in them, but I hope you’ll enjoy anyway!
